GREETING

Machiya are the traditional townhouses of Kyoto's merchants. These wooden row houses, some dating back 300 years, served as both the home and workplace for their occupants. They were houses built for common citizens, whereby the business was operated in the front of the house and the living quarters were found at the back.

Unfortunately, over the years, many have been destroyed to make room for development. Recently, however, there has been strong interest to preserve the Machiya's architectural heritage and restore an important symbol of Kyoto's past. Our Machiya is such a case. Located on a small cobble stone alley, it still retains the atmosphere of the ancient city.

It is in a convenient area for sightseeing, with many restaurants and shopping close at hand, and is the perfect place to launch your Kyoto experience. For example, many of the tourist attractions such as the Kawaramachi Geisha district, Kiyomizu Temple (nominated as one of the new 7 wonders of the world), Koudaiji Temple, Chionin Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Nishi Honganji Temple, Higashi Honganji Temple, and the Nijojo Castle are all close by.

It is only a 10 minute walk to the most popular shopping area called “Shijo Karasuma,” and minutes away from public transportation.

A total renovation was completed to provide all modern amenities, while at the same time retaining the charm and tradition of this beautiful Machiya. In this way, guests will gain some insight as to the past way of life in Kyoto, and it has only been in the last couple of years that such accommodation has become available to the tourist.

The townhouse is fully furnished. It has tatami mat rooms with complex beams, a fully equipped kitchen, and a living room looking out onto a small Japanese garden. Guests sleep on traditional Japanese futons.

We are proud to offer our Machiya townhouse (four people/day limit) so that you can experience “Kyoto living” and not just another hotel room. Unlike a hotel room or Ryokan where guests only have use of the room, you have use of the entire house and don't have to share with other guests.
